BICHOLIM: Villagers from Nadora village which falls in Bardez along on the border of Bicholim taluka have strongly oppose the mining project which is likely to come in this village.
The villagers have formed a Nadora Bachao committee comprising of Mahadev Gawas, Devesh Redkar, Dayanand Gawas, Sanjeev Gawas, Dharmendra Gawas, Umesh Gawas, Rajesh Gawas, Chandan Gawas, Sriram Degvekar, Rajan Shetye, Tarachandra Gawas and others to fight against battle of injustice meted out to the villagers by the government.
According to committee members, Nadora village is gifted with various natural resources and natural water reservoirs like springs, lakes, rivers, different types of birds, animals.
Agriculture is the main source of livelihood of the villagers. Villagers say mining has lot of adverse effects on environment like contamination of soil, ground water and surface water from mining processes and as such it leads to destruction of fertility of soil, it will have direct effect on agriculture and therefore major source of income of people will be affected.
Secondly run-off of mere soil or rock debris will also devastate the surrounding vegetation which is being preserved by the villagers from last many years.
The villagers have therefore urged the Government of Goa not to allow setting up of a mining project adding that they will appreciate the government if it brings an industrial estate which will generate employment.
