‘Provide relief for retrenched Goans’

PANJIM: Global recession has had a cascading effect on the job market, which found found an echo in the House yesterday.
Reverse brain drain from Gulf countries in addition to large scale retrenchment in factories dotting various industrial estates in the state were the major thrust areas of the opposition BJP benches.
On his part, Labour Minister Joaquim Alemao assured the House that he would collate such data and expedite disbursal of financial relief.
The Labour Department claimed it no records of the reverse flow of Goans from Gulf and other foreign countries.
Saligao MLA Dilip Parulekar, who raised the matter through a Starred Question, pointed out media reports quoting the NRI Cell pegging the figures of Goan employees returning from Gulf / foreign countries at 40,000. The Labour Minister Joaquim Alemao, in his reply, claimed to have disbursed a sum of Rs 75 lakhs last year through the Labour Welfare Board's 'Retrenchement Workers Scheme'.
